Cat Crates & Enclosures

Cat crates and enclosures create a defined space for rest or supervised time together. Explore modular pens, covered fabric designs and sheltered hideaways, including the Furry Fiesta playpen. Choose by enclosure type and usable space: an open pen, a crate and an outdoor cat house do different jobs.

Choosing cat enclosures

First decide whether you need a temporary boundary, an enclosed resting area or an outdoor shelter. Open-top pens do not reliably contain a cat that can climb or jump. A modular panel enclosure offers configurable layouts, but the completed shape, panel gaps, door and any roof must all suit the individual cat.

Space beyond a bed

Measure the usable interior rather than the footprint alone. Your cat needs room to change position comfortably, and longer supervised stays require room for separate rest, water and toileting areas. Compare cat beds and litter trays with the available space before you build or buy.

Fabric or solid panels?

A folding mesh pen can be convenient for temporary use and storage, while rigid panels create a different structure and viewing experience. The Furry Fiesta playpen includes a zipped roof and entry. Mesh and zips still need inspection, especially if your cat claws or chews at the sides.

Shelter is not containment

The wooden outdoor cat house provides sheltered levels and open access, not a closed outdoor run. Position it in an appropriate protected location and follow the assembly instructions. For transport, use a suitable product from cat carriers and backpacks, not a stationary pen or furniture crate.

Set up a retreat

Place an indoor enclosure away from busy walkways and sudden noise while keeping your cat within easy observation. Let your cat explore it before asking for a stay, and add familiar bedding if there is sufficient space. Cat beds and lounges offer separate resting options when a closed space is unnecessary.

Inspect every opening

Cats can climb panels and test small gaps, so assess more than the door latch. Check the roof, corners, joins and distance between bars or panels against your cat’s size and behaviour. With a modular enclosure, every connector must be fully fitted; changing the layout means checking the finished structure again.

Choose manageable materials

Think about how you will remove bedding, reach corners and clean the base. A folding fabric playpen and a wooden shelter need different care. Follow the individual product instructions, let cleaned surfaces dry fully and replace damaged parts before reuse rather than relying on a temporary fix at an opening.

Keep uses separate

A playpen is not a permanent replacement for room to move, explore and interact. Recovery or restricted movement should follow your vet’s plan, including whether this type of enclosure is appropriate. The outdoor wooden house is a shelter, while cat carriers are the relevant starting point for carrying your cat outside the home.

Cat crates and enclosures: your questions answered

Will an open-top playpen keep my cat inside?

Not reliably. Cats may jump or climb out, even when the side panels look tall. Use open designs only where supervised use is appropriate. A roofed product such as the Furry Fiesta playpen still needs secure closures and regular checks; it is not guaranteed escape-proof.

What is the difference between a crate and a carrier?

A crate or pen generally creates a stationary space, while a carrier is designed to be moved with an animal inside. Never lift an occupied enclosure unless its instructions expressly permit it. For journeys, choose from cat carriers and backpacks and check the specific transport requirements.

How much room should I allow?

Allow enough usable space for your cat to stand, turn and lie naturally, without fittings blocking movement. Consider how long it will be used and whether separate water and toileting areas are needed. Check the measurements of the litter tray and bedding as well as the enclosure.

Is the outdoor cat house an enclosed catio?

No. The large wooden cat house has open access and provides shelter and resting levels. It does not stop a cat leaving the area. Use it only in a setting appropriate to your cat’s outdoor access, and follow its placement and assembly guidance.

Can I use an enclosure after an operation?

Only if your vet confirms the design and size suit the recovery plan. A general pet pen is not a medical device, and some cats need more restricted movement than others. Share the dimensions and construction of the modular enclosure with your vet before selecting it for recovery.
